Clearson Holdings Ltd and Seamus Hampson – a negative review

This site is a critical review of Seamus Hampson’s work on a project and contains accurate information on from direct experience. Despite threats of a law suit for euro 500,000, this site remains a testament to the standard of work they provide.

Clearson Holdings Ltd and Seamus Hampson provide construction and building services for domestic and commercial projects in Ireland.

They are a construction company with experience of construction in Ireland and the UK.

The principal builder, Seamus Hampson from Maghera in Derry, gained his construction building experience from major projects in London. They work with a range of qualified and unqualified tradesmen to complete projects, including roofing, electrics, gas installation and plumbing. However, frustratingly, after being fully paid, they have not completed the work in this project.

After 2.5 years of promises, there is no electricity as the house was declared unsafe by the regulator – there is no water to the sink or toilet and there is mould left from a leaky pipe, and the roof is incorrect and requires 25k of work – other work is sub-standard. Without heating etc, a fine house is uninhabitable.

They work in different areas of Ireland, and SH promised that the job would be dealt with 110%. But after more than 2 years on an eight week job, I am still waiting or having to employ others to finish the job.

Faults included: missing skirtings; live wires left by electricians leading to Notice of Potential Hazard; unfinished plumbing with water pipes unterminated and hidden under cabinets and underground; unfinished kitchen and bathroom; incorrect fitting of toilet cistern leading to constant overflows; broken manhole in driveway; industrial heaters left on, possibly to cover the faulty plumbing and black mould grown on the new plasterboard from leaks; completely wrong roof and faulty roof installation.

Missing skirting.

As left by electrician, live.

Hanging wires, one live uncovered;
one dead.

Pipe not connected;

Correct handle requested.

Non-vertical tiling not corrected.

Equipment not re-installed, damaged on uninstallation.

Broken manhole not replaced. Cracked driveway.

Unplastered wall.

Industrial heaters left running without agreement, leading to large electrical bill.

Promised finish on ‘another job’?

Promised kitchen finish on another job

Felt roof installed without permission, compared to quote which was for metal roof with raised edge. I paid for a metal roof and got a felt roof.

Membrane incorrectly not overlapping felt, will lead to leaks if any tiles are broken.

Cistern surround without access to inside.

    In February 2021, Seamus Hampson quoted for an extension to my house. After extras it was about 200k paid to him and the company. 70% of the work was done but it is now March 2023, and the whole house is without gas (so no heat) or certified electrics, and looks like a mess. He is more or less gone with his tools. He demands money paid in full before the work is done and once that is done, there is the risk of non-completion unless further money is paid.

    Seamus Hampson is listed as employee of Clearson Holdings Limited, a company registered in Ireland.

    Greg said: Really? Why did you pay in advance? You should only pay for materials physically supplied to your address and after work has been done. It may be reasonable to pay a 20% deposit on materials. Otherwise, you have no supplier guarantees and the builder will be long gone if anything breaks.

    Clearson Holdings Limited agreed to install a metal roof on a 80 square meter area. After much delay, without permission, they slapped on a torch-on felt roof, which looks really bad with tarred joints. Seamus Hampson promised to put a metal edge so that it would not be visible from the road, but after two years, he has not done that. The cost of putting the metal roof now would be about 25k. The cost of the tarred roof he put on is a fraction of that.

    Basically, he takes the customer’s money and then does the cheapest thing that he can call it ‘job done’. But it would be fraudulent misrepresentation, to state that the roof promised is being installed, when in fact a completely different roof is being put on. And it would be trespass to go onto someone’s property to do work that was without authorisation, regardless of whether access on to the property was granted for other works.

    • The roof detail was promised. But it was not be done and the visible edge is left as a torch-on job (like a shed). It’s a good torch-on job but not attractive, cheap and not as contracted (which was a copper roofing system). My belief is SH simply got the money and didn’t want to pay a metal roofer when he could just slap on a felt roof.

    He agreed to install a steel roller shutter door to replace my old wood garage door. £3500, included a small side door. He was paid, but 18 months later work not done… He stated that he would do it as late as March 2023. Finally, when the electrics were condemned, he confirmed he was not doing it, having stated earlier that he had paid for the door. Unlikely both statements were true.
